This site is provided as an aid to students and the community of forest pathology. It is dedicated to current and past students of ESF (College of Environmental Science and Forestry, State University of New York). The pages were initiated while the author was Associate Professor at ESF, teaching Forest and Shade Tree Pathology, among other courses. The technology and content have been extensively updated since then.
There are really three parts of this website:
- the web pages that present an overview of forest pathology;
- a blog in which forest pathologists can present and discuss ideas, findings, and current knowledge on a specialized topic, and;
- fora in which anyone may ask questions, post observations, and engage in discussions related to forest pathology. Hopefully these sections will contribute to an international online community of forest pathology.
1. Web Pages
A calendar of upcoming forest pathology meetings is in the sidebar on the home page and in the blog and fora. If you have an event you would like to see listed there, please contact me at .
Any comments you have about the design or content of these pages will be gladly received. Did I get something wrong? Should additional websites be linked? New references listed? Please email me.
The original site had pop-up definitions for scientific terms. I will try to find a new way to do that when time allows.
The text and files presented in the web page section (except for some of the illustrations) are the intellectual property of the author. You may use them for teaching or presentations with attribution. Please do not copy any of the content for use in other websites or published material.
Throughout the site, symbols indicate links to US Forest Service publications:

About Registering, Commenting, Posting
Registering is not required to read anything on the site. It is necessary if you want to create or reply to forum posts, comment on blog posts, or request to author blog articles. In addition to your username, your real name is requested during registration. Although you can change it in your profile, by default your real name will show when you enter a forum topic, comment, or author a blog post. As this is a professional site, just like in a journal article, people should know who is making the statements.
Please remember the rules:
- Be nice.
- Keep it clean.
- Have fun.
- Help people learn.
2. Blog
In the blog, forest pathologists can present and discuss ideas, findings, and current knowledge on a specialized topic, ideally one that they focus on. It is suitable for more extended essays than the forum. Special permissions are needed to author blog articles. Established forest pathologists and graduate students who wish to author blog articles are cordially invited to email me at .
Registered users can comment on blog articles.
3. Fora
Fora are available for many forest pathology topics. They can be used for shorter announcements, discussions involving many participants, questions, polls, etc. Any registered user can initiate and reply to forum posts. Images can be uploaded to enhance your post.
There are two ways to subscribe. In Fora > Menu > Subscriptions, you can choose one of three global options: (a) Individual Subscriptions (no global subscription); (b) New Topics (you will be notified of any new topics in any forum, but you will not be notified of replies to them unless you subscribe to that topic), and; (c) New Topics and Posts (you will be notified of all topics and replies; individual subscriptions are not needed).
In the same menu, you can unsubscribe to individual fora and topics. To subscribe to them individually, look for link/buttons on the lower left with the envelope icon. Note that when you subscribe to a forum, you will be notified of new topics in it only, not replies. You will automatically be subscribed to any topic you start or reply to.
