Brief Overview
The 1999 NCFPW was held September 13 to 16, 1999 at the stately Fort Garry Hotel (a designated Winnipeg heritage building) in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada. An ice breaker (salad/sandwich bar included) was held Monday evening (September 13)
A full day technical session on Tuesday, September 14, had two main themes:
1. Pest management in the urban forest which included: Dutch elm disease (DED) management in Manitoba and the City of Winnipeg, management of pests through community forest partnerships and urban tree inventories, plus a new pest of concern, the Asian long horn beetle.
2. New approaches to forest pest management which included: GIS/GPS navigation for aerial insecticide applications, the use of a biosynthetic molting hormone in the management of defoliating Lepidoptera and recent biological control initiatives for forest insects, diseases and competing vegetation.
The poster session was held during the day on Tuesday.
The slide contest was also held on Tuesday. Results of the slide contest are available here. camera clip art
On Wednesday, September 15, there was a field trip by bus, which included: a tour of Winnipeg's majestic elms (the largest remaining urban American elm forest in the world), DED sanitation, dwarf mistletoe management in Belair Provincial Forest, Armillaria root rot in mature and immature pine stands, forest health in pre-harvest surveys, western gall rust resistance study and a visit (including a park interpreter) to Grand Beach (a world class beach on Lake Winnipeg). The traditional Fungal Foray/Hexapod Hunt was combined with the field tour. The field trip was followed by a banquet (featuring an authentic Manitoba buffalo steak barbecue, the ice cream social and live local entertainment) at the rustic Hoedown restaurant near Stead, Manitoba. Photos from the field trip can be viewed here. camera clip art
