Forest Health Specialists, Southwestern Region, US Forest Service

The Southwestern Region, Forest Health Protection is seeking interest for 120-day details, with Temp Promotion potential, and planning to fill 2 permanent, full-time Forest Health Specialists (job series Biological Scientist, GS-0401-9/11). These positions serve as Forest Health Survey Specialists for the New Mexico and Arizona Zones of Forest Health Protection. Major position duties include: 

  • Responsible for planning, coordinating and conducting aerial detection surveys for forest insects and diseases encompassing most forested areas within the corresponding State and elsewhere as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance concerning forest insect and disease location, extent and severity to land managers for integration into resource management activities.
  • Prepares and writes reports to present survey data including GIS maps, summary tables and graphic displays, which includes mapping of insect and disease caused damage, management projects and reporting regional insect and disease conditions.
  • Serves as Zone Point of Contact for technology, GIS and ArcGIS on-line support to specialists.
  • Participates in field surveys as needed to evaluate forest damage from abiotic and biotic impacts. Summarizes data obtained from field surveys and applies appropriate statistical tests. Reports results to various users in written and graphic formats.

Forest Health Monitoring Program Manager, Rocky Mountain Region, US Forest Service
