The Forest Health Specialist provides forest health technical assistance to landowners and managers statewide. This position conducts forest insect and disease training sessions and field days and responds to phone calls, email correspondence and other requests for assistance from state foresters, industrial and private forest landowners. The Forest Health Specialist may supervise seasonal employees. Some overnight travel is expected and occasional work on weekends is possible during the field season. Specialist may be trained as an aerial detection surveyor to collect aerial survey and conduct ground checks in cooperation with U.S. Forest Service. Closes 2025 July 14.

This is a Regional Leadership Position, responsible for guiding and coordinating the delivery of pathology related technical assistance to internal Forest Service staff and external state and non-governmental partners. As a subject matter expert, the position requires extensive knowledge of forest disease detection, suppression, management, and monitoring protocols. As a Regional Program Manager, the incumbent must be a good communicator with an aptitude for initiating and fostering partnerships with state and federal government agency counterparts, universities, and Tribal partners. The position also provides direction and support to five zoned Forest Health Protection Service Centers (with a duty station that is negotiable) in the Region and serves on west wide and national committees and working groups.

These positions are key members of the Forest Health Protection team and work with entomologists and pathologists in the region to survey and monitor for forest health concerns. Primary duties include planning and participating in field activities; surveying forests for insect and disease damage agents, including the identification of different tree species and separation of subtle color variations in foliage;capturing data on forest health conditions; collecting and processing samples; and data analysis and report preparation. - Coordinates and conducts aerial detection surveys for forest damage caused by insects, diseases, and abiotic factors.
- Provides technical assistance concerning location, extent, and severity of forest damage to land managers for integration into resource management activities.
- Participates in field surveys and analyzes data to evaluate forest damage.
- Uses survey data to produce GIS maps, summary tables, AGOL displays, and condition reports of biotic and abiotic caused forest damage.
